The five signs worth knowing

01

A new lump or thickening

In the breast or armpit, often painless. It might feel like a pea, a seed, or an area firmer than the rest.

Noticed a change? Book a doctor's appointment. Most changes aren't cancer — but every change deserves a check.

022 / 5

A change in size or shape

One breast becoming noticeably larger, lower or a different shape than it usually is.

033 / 5

Dimpling or puckering of the skin

Skin that looks like orange peel, or pulls inward when you raise your arms.

044 / 5

Changes to the nipple

A nipple that turns inward, changes position, or leaks fluid — especially if it is blood-stained.

A rash, redness or pain that lingers

Crusting or redness around the nipple, or new pain in one spot that doesn't go away.

How to check

Five minutes, once a month

There’s no special technique. The goal is simply to know how your body usually looks and feels, so you notice when something changes.

Look1 min

Stand in front of a mirror, arms by your sides, then raised. Look for changes in shape, skin or nipples.

Feel3 min

Use the flat of your fingers in small circles, covering the whole breast and up into the armpit — standing and lying down.

Note1 min

Jot down anything new. If something's changed, book a doctor's appointment — don't wait for next month.

Good questions, honest answers.

Most breast lumps aren’t cancer. But any new lump or change should be checked by a doctor, and quickly.
